In hospital posts the NHS Litigation Authority provides indemnity for trainees for clinical negligence claims for NHS duties. This may not include all situations for example disciplinary issues, referrals to the GMC, personal gross negligence, police investigations or complaints. It is strongly recommended and contractually required that trainees take out supplementary insurance with one of the medical defence bodies.

In general practice placements indemnity for clinical negligence is NOT provided by the NHS. It is your responsibility to ensure you have indemnity cover with a medical defence body.

The subscription rate for a GP specialty trainee, undertaking a full year in general practice, is considerably more than the rate for a trainee based in hospital. The NHS will therefore reimburse the difference between the subscription you have paid for any given 12 month period and the annual hospital rate. When you commence GP training your medical indemnity provider can provide you with a letter to help you with reimbursement. The form to claim back the difference is attached below.
